Oooof, that smarts....

Ant Bully got it in the the crotch this weekend. With an $8.1 million , 5th place opening weekend Ant Bully isn't looking to set any records. We really weren't expeting to though, we just wanted to make an enjoyable film. I think we did that just fine.

There are so many things you could point to...
CGI glut, "been there done that" ant movie, poor marketing on Warners part...my favorite, "Overt Communist Overtones".... It really doesn't matter...even if hind site is 20/20 whatever mistakes were made will be repeated by somebody, we all know that.

My biggest concerns are for the industry and for
DNA. Everytime a CG film doesn't bring in major bank, studios immediately start shredding documents and cutting jobs. And as for DNA...I love those guys. I owe them so much and I want to continue to see "Paul the Monkey" pop up at them end of something I'm watching.

And remember...give some love and send a comment if you were one of the six or seven people that saw the movie this weekend. I'll be posting some of my shots...ones that were in the movie and some that were cut due to rewrites...in the next week or so.

Cheers,
Matthew

OK, yo...what you sucka's waiting on? Give me some feedback yo!!!

If you're breath stank, I would tell you. If you had something stuck in your teeth after dinner, I would tell you. If your dress were caught up in your pantyhose, I would tell you Andrew...

So help a brotha out and tell me what you thought of the film.

I thought the movie itself was just OK. It was certainly no fault of the animation, lighting and any other department. The voice acting, story, and weak writing really made this movie pretty weak.

When I see it again...it'll probably be on DVD.

The animation was pretty good though. Throughout most of the first part, I saw alot of "W" poses with headshakes...kinda reminded me of the days of Neutron. Toward the end, the acting got stronger and more fun to watch.

Overall, I gave it a 6 out of a 10.

Hey...you wanted honest. :)

Russell,

I would love for you to post some of your thoughts of early development stuff such as design and story and the way things changed. You said something about doing that awhile back, so get to cracking on that. I bet you have some cool stuff to share.

As far as the movie for me, 10 being Nemo, I give it a 6 also. That dosen't mean kids won't give it a 8 or something. Kids are really digging this movie, parents aren't and not to many people drop the 4 to 10 year olds off at the movie alone so seeing it once for a mom or dad is enough.

I agree also with you PJ, it sure aint the movie it was going to be, not that it would have helped the box office any, but it could have been better.

I remember the VERY first cut screened to all of DNA (at the time, I had accepted the position at Blue Sky and was a week away from head out) and it felt stronger than the final product. I think Mommo was more fun to listen to in the animatic too.

Also, why the hell do studios need huge names for voice talent. That really pisses me off. Pixar is taking a leap and getting a "no-name" comedian for the main character in their next film. Right on Pixar...

This is the end of my garbled rant.

Hi Matthew
I saw kLango's site and it was very informative. It really pained me to see our movie trashed so badly. 3D IMAX rocks but I did find myself feeling...unfulfilled after seeing it again. I don't feel that want to see it again like with Incredibles - again and again I could watch it. AB, not so much. Never could identify with Lucas, "star" performances felt weak, still love Tress McNellie's Mommo, nothing to take away from the film afterwards.

On the other hand, my 2-going-on-3 daughter LOVES it. She hasn't stopped talking about it since the crew screening. She "plays" with Lucas and the ants. Maybe she needs more friends...
